Stories From Other Teens
Below are stories of what other teens have gone through before they got help through Jane's Due Process. Call us at 1-866-www-jane, and we can help you, too.
"No! NO! I cannot tell them. Absolutely not. I will not go through what my sister did. My father just started speaking to her again after throwing her out 4 years ago. My nephew lost 4 years of not knowing me or my parents."
- 16 year old describing how her father forced her older sister when she was a teenager to continue an unintended pregnancy, quit high school, and then kicked her out of home when the baby was born.
"My parents told me that I would have to marry my boyfriend if I got pregnant so that they wouldn't have to pay for a baby. But if I told them I was getting an abortion, then they would just kick me out for getting pregnant and tell me I have to go live with my boyfriend and his mom. (My parents) wouldn't want anything to do with me. My sister went through the same thing when she was sixteen."
- 16 year old whose sister became divorced at 19
"I told my mother (that I was pregnant). That's why I'm staying with my cousin. She threw me out. She was so ugly with me when I went back for my clothes. I see my little sister at school, and she says that mom doesn't talk about me anymore. But (if my mother was notified by the abortion clinic about my decision to have an abortion), she would tell my cousin who would ask me to leave. (My cousin) thinks people who get abortions are dirty people. But living with her means that I get to finish school."
- 17 year old
"I didn't know what my parents thought about abortion or anything like that until a few weeks ago. My parents invited my aunt and uncle over for dinner. I sat at the kitchen table and listened to my father tell my uncle that it was the best thing for everyone that my uncle kicked my cousin out of the house for being pregnant. No one disagreed with him. My cousin is 16. I have no idea where she is living or if she is going to school. My father said, 'well, at least she's not getting an abortion.'"
- 15 year old
"My dad's a recovering crack addict. I'm really proud of his recovery. But he would take this as a reason to use again. Dad would tell mom. And my mom is off her meds again. She never recovered from my older sister getting pregnant in high school."
- 17 year old who lives with her mother who is bipolar
"(My parents) are missing and really, I don't want to find them. I've been living with my boyfriend for the last couple of years and everything has been going real well since (my parents) left. I can't ask anyone where they are. My relatives think my whole family is bad and they are just waiting to see if I screw up."
- 17 year old with a college scholarship
"Her mother just decided this past summer that she didn't want her 5 kids anymore. They have been sent off to live with different relatives in the area. We don't have any information on how to even contact her."
- Aunt of 16 year old, mother missing, father deceased
"I'm living with my step-mother. My father died last year. My mother is in China and does not speak English. I have no other relatives here. My step-mother looks for reasons for me to leave her house and this would be it. I just have a few more months before I graduate from high school."
- 16 year old immigrant with full college scholarship
"He wouldn't wait for 30 days (to allow the birth control to take effect). He wouldn't wear a condom. I am so angry and ashamed of myself. I thought that I could handle this. I thought that I would not get pregnant again."
- 17 year old who became pregnant shortly after an abortion
